Trim, Trimless, Pinhole or Wall Washer: Which Fixture Should You Use?

Understand the visual and functional differences between four common architectural fixture types.

Architectural lighting is not only about brightness. The visible aperture, ceiling detail and direction of light influence how refined the final space feels.

Trim fixtures

The most practical option for standard ceilings. The visible flange covers the cut edge and makes installation more forgiving.

Trimless fixtures

Designed for a seamless ceiling appearance. They require accurate installation and finishing, but can create a highly integrated architectural result.

Pinhole fixtures

A small visible aperture reduces visual clutter and helps control glare. They are ideal where the ceiling should remain quiet and discreet.

Wall washers

Wall washers distribute light asymmetrically across a vertical surface. They are used for artwork, textures, retail walls and to visually expand a space.

Combine types with discipline

A project may need more than one fixture type, but each should have a clear purpose. Limiting unnecessary variation improves maintenance and visual consistency.
